DAIRY AS CRAFT

THE BEAUTY OF TRADITION IS THE POWER TO EVOLVE IT.

PLEASANT PASTURES

The milk for Truly Grass Fed products comes from Irish family farms located in the south and east of Ireland. Our farmers share deep bonds with their herds, with sustainability and animal welfare always top priorities. Truly Grass Fed farms typically have an average of one cow for every two acres and are certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW (A Greener World). AGW are an independent non-profit farm certification organization, which confirms that animals are raised outdoors on pasture, using truly sustainable high welfare farming practices.

IT’S ALL IN THE FAMILY

Welcome to a place where land is passed down through the generations and where farming is not only a way of life, but also an enduring tradition. Our farmers represent a mix of young, highly skilled entrepreneurs and seasoned veterans. Here, they are sincere stewards of the land, viewing dairy farming as both a fulfilling lifestyle and a viable business. We are constantly exploring new technologies to improve the quality of life for our cows and the farmers who care for them.

OUT AND ABOUT

Truly Grass Fed cows live how nature intended: outside and able to roam. They are free to leisurely graze on acres of lush, plentiful grass and enjoy their spacious surroundings for most of the year. When the temperature drops enough that grass growth slows down in the winter, our cows move inside and enjoy a diet of grass silage collected from the fields during summer, plus a small amount of concentrates for extra nutrition.

COWNATOMY 101

Our Truly Grass Fed cows live differently and here’s your chance to explore exactly how and why.

PEACE OF MIND

Stress-free cows are happy cows, and happy cows are Truly Grass Fed cows. The slow-paced routines and familiar masters on a small family farm are the perfect fit for these creatures of habit.

GUT HEALTH

Cows are ruminants, which means their stomachs have four compartments. The ability to roam and graze luscious fresh grass provides Truly Grass Fed cows with the most natural and highly digestible form of nourishment.

HEARTFELT BONDS

Small herds mean that each cow receives more individual attention. Generations of masters and animals live and grow together, making this symbiotic lifestyle a reality. Animal welfare is truly at a premium on Irish farms.

95% GRASS DIET

Our cows dine on a diet of 95% grass over the year. Farmers typically include clover in the grass seed mix, which provides variety for the cows and the added benefit of naturally fertilizing the soil. The remainder of their diet is made up from nutrient concentrates for key stages in the year.

WHERE THE GRASS IS GREENER

Truly Grass Fed has been practicing the most modern methods of regenerative farming for decades and is proud to have its roots deep in the Irish tradition of sustainable agriculture, cow-friendly climate and rich natural resources.

THE CLIMATE

“Too hot to trot” or “too cold for comfort” are rarities in Ireland. Temperatures typically range from 40–50 degrees Fahrenheit (4–10 Celsius) in winter and 60–70 degrees Fahrenheit (16–21 Celsius) in summer, giving our cows the freedom to graze outdoors for most of the year.

THE AIR

Ireland is not only known for fresh, clean air, it is one of the lowest emitters of carbon in the world and is certified by the Carbon Trust in the UK. Truly Grass Fed contributes to Ireland’s low carbon footprint by keeping our cows where they belong: outside. Because our cows spend the majority of the year outdoors, there is no need for expensive energy-wasting heat, fans or air conditioning. What’s more, our immense grasslands convert vast amounts of CO2 into oxygen every day, further contributing to the clean air and positive environmental impact.

THE RAIN

Ireland’s plentiful precipitation is one of its most valuable natural resources as far as dairy cows are concerned. Thanks to the country’s coastal location and its mild climate, the grass on our farms does not require mechanical irrigation. That means our farmers face no energy costs associated with watering their pastures.

THE GRASS

Ireland boasts a yearly grass growth rate that exceeds the average, so it’s no wonder this majestic nation is home to some of the world’s finest grass-fed dairy farms. Truly Grass Fed farmers choose grass varieties that offer exceptional nutritional value and digestibility for their cows. When reseeding, farmers often add clover to the sward for its nutritional value and to aid the natural nitrogen balance in the soil.

THE SOIL

Our mineral and organic soils are one of Ireland’s most powerful assets, and they are the basis for the Truly Grass Fed diet. Lime is used as a natural neutralizing agent and it is highly beneficial to grass growth. To optimize the pasture and soil health, our farmers test the soil fertility every three to five years and add the recommended nutrients as required to ensure a balanced supply.
